REP27You appoint an EU representative on a Monday. By Friday nothing has happened. No email from Brussels, no request from a data subject, no authority asking anything. The desk is silent.
That is not a problem. That is the whole point of Article 27.
Here is what actually happens in week one. On day one, four things arrive and the file closes: the signed designation required by Article 27(1), with an eIDAS electronic signature; a live certificate with a code anyone can check on any day; the exact privacy notice wording for Articles 13 and 14, in every language your site runs in; and a request desk in eight languages, with no fee per request. Days two to seven: nothing. Representation is active on every one of them.
Because an authority can write on day three, or in year three. Nobody schedules that. You are not buying activity — you are buying a name that exists on the day it is needed, and an address a regulator can reach without going through you.
And the honest half, which most providers skip. Three cases where you need nobody:
— You have a real establishment in a member state. Article 27 does not reach you; the establishment itself is the answer.
— Processing is occasional, low risk, no special categories. Article 27(2) exempts you.
— No customers and no tracking in Britain. Then there is no UK designation to buy, whatever anyone sells you. The UK one is separate from the EU one; it is not an upgrade.
