Furniture fails on physics, not paperwork — but the paperwork is what stops the sale.
Chests that tip, chairs that collapse and upholstery that burns too readily are the recurring findings in this category. Behind each of them sits the same question from the authority: who in the Union is answerable for this product?
Stability and the tip-over tests
Storage furniture is expected to stay upright under foreseeable use, including a child climbing it. Tip-restraints and the instructions that go with them are part of the assessment, not an optional extra.
Where a product ships flat-packed, the assembly instructions are effectively part of the safety case.
Upholstery and flammability
National flammability requirements differ across member states, and the United Kingdom's are stricter again. A sofa that is compliant in one market is not automatically compliant next door.
This is one of the few areas where a single European answer does not exist, and the file has to reflect each market you enter.
Bulky goods and the label problem
Large items are usually sold from a photograph and delivered in a carton. The identification block therefore has to be on the packaging and repeated in the instructions, because the consumer may never see the product itself before assembly.
Putting it only on the pallet is the mistake that leaves the consumer with no way to reach anyone.
What you can show an inspector
A mandate with a date and a signature, an address that answers, and a code that an inspector can resolve on the spot from a phone.
That is the whole point of the service: it survives contact with someone checking.
What separates this from the cheap offers
The cheapest providers sell you an address and a PDF. Neither survives a check, because neither can be confirmed from outside.

Do tip-restraints have to be supplied with the product?
For storage furniture at risk of tipping, supplying restraints and clear instructions is the expected measure. Selling without them where the risk exists is what draws a finding.
Is flammability the same across the EU?
No. Requirements vary by member state and are stricter in the United Kingdom. Your file needs to cover the specific markets you sell into.
Where does the identification block go on flat-pack furniture?
On the packaging and in the instructions, so that the person assembling the product can reach someone. The pallet is not a place the consumer will ever look.
In this category the safety case and the sales case are the same document, which is a good reason to build it once and build it properly.
