Regulation (EU) 2023/988 · Article 16

Clothing has the tightest labels and the least room to add anything.

A garment already carries fibre composition, care symbols and size. The identification details required by the General Product Safety Regulation have to fit alongside them, and that constraint is where most textile sellers get stuck.

What has to be on the garment

Fibre composition labelling is its own regulation and is mandatory. Separately, the manufacturer and the responsible person must be identifiable, with a postal address, on the product, its packaging or an accompanying document.

Because sewn-in labels are cramped, most sellers put composition and care on the sewn label and the identification block on a swing tag or the polybag.

Children's clothing is a category of its own

Cords, drawstrings and small detachable parts on children's garments are among the most notified issues in the Union. The standards are specific and the checks are frequent.

If your range includes children's wear, expect it to be the part of the catalogue that draws attention.

Chemical restrictions travel with the fabric

Azo dyes, formaldehyde and certain flame retardants are restricted, and a supplier declaration is not the same as a test report. When a check comes, the report is what is asked for.

This is the documentation gap that turns a routine border check into a stopped consignment.

Included in every plan

Unlimited products, the written designation, the address that goes on the label and a register entry that turns red the day the mandate ends.

We would rather you could prove the appointment than merely assert it.

Why the code matters more than the price

Anyone can print a name on a label. The question an inspector or a marketplace asks is whether that name is really bound to you, today.

Our register answers that in one scan, and it answers honestly: if the mandate has lapsed, it says so.

Questions we are asked

Can the identification go on the swing tag rather than the sewn label?

Yes. The regulation allows the packaging or an accompanying document where the product itself cannot carry it, and a swing tag is accepted practice for garments.

Is fibre composition part of GPSR?

No, that comes from separate textile labelling rules. They apply at the same time, which is why garments end up carrying two sets of mandatory information.

Do I need test reports for dyes?

For restricted substances you need evidence, and a supplier's word is thin evidence. Test reports for the fabrics you actually use are what withstands a request.

Textiles reward preparation more than most categories, because everything that has to be said must be said in a very small space.
