Who has to appoint one

Manufacturers and online sellers outside the Union placing furniture on the EU market.

Thresholds and exemptions

None under GPSR. EUDR thresholds depend on the size of the operator.

What must appear on the label

Manufacturer and responsible person details with an EU address, model and batch identification, assembly and safety instructions, and stability warnings for tall storage units.

Marketplace fields

Marketplaces require the responsible person block and, for children's furniture, the relevant safety standard reference.

Documentation you must hold

Technical documentation, risk analysis, stability test evidence, REACH compliance for coatings and foams, and the EUDR due diligence statement for wooden items.

Standards and testing

EN 12520 and EN 12521 for domestic seating and tables, EN 14749 for storage units, EN 716 for children's cots, plus fire behaviour requirements in some member states.

Language requirements

Assembly and safety instructions in the language of each member state of sale.

Before the product is made available.

How long records are kept

10 years.

What happens if you do not comply

Recall and withdrawal orders. Tip-over incidents involving chests of drawers lead to some of the most publicised EU recalls.

National market surveillance authorities.

Where the boundary lies

Furniture for children can fall under stricter child-specific standards, and upholstered furniture faces national fire regulations that differ sharply between member states.
