Who has to appoint one

Manufacturers and sellers outside the Union placing fitness equipment on the EU market. Motorised treadmills are machinery with a drive system; free weights and racks are consumer products with stability and load requirements.

Thresholds and exemptions

EN 957 distinguishes class H equipment for home use from class S for studio use, with different load and durability requirements. Selling home-class equipment to gyms is a common and consequential error.

What must appear on the label

Manufacturer and responsible person details, model and batch identification, the maximum user weight, the class designation, assembly and anchoring instructions, and for powered equipment CE marking with the electrical data and the emergency stop information.

Marketplace fields

Marketplaces enforce the responsible person and remove treadmills lacking CE marking. Studio buyers require class S certification, and insurers ask for it after incidents.

Documentation you must hold

Technical documentation, risk analysis covering entrapment, falls and mechanical failure, test reports against the applicable part of EN 957, electrical documentation for powered machines, and WEEE and packaging registrations.

Standards and testing

EN ISO 20957 series by equipment type covering stability, strength, endurance and entrapment, plus EN 60335-2-... electrical testing for motorised equipment and emergency stop verification for treadmills.

Language requirements

Assembly, use and safety instructions in the language of each member state of sale.

How long records are kept

Ten years.

What happens if you do not comply

Withdrawal and Safety Gate alerts. Treadmill entrapment injuries to children have driven recalls and design changes, and the safety key and rear clearance requirements come directly from those incidents.

Who enforces it

Market surveillance authorities, labour inspectorates for commercial installations and customs.

Where the boundary lies

Class H equipment used in a commercial gym is outside its intended use, which shifts liability to whoever supplied it knowing the setting. Powered equipment is machinery, and the emergency stop and safety key are mandatory features rather than options.

What is class H versus class S?

EN ISO 20957 classes: H for home use and S for studio or commercial use, with different durability and load requirements. Supplying H-class to a gym is a misuse the supplier can be liable for.
